Two-story factory-built homes move closer

HUD proposed in June to drop the permanent steel chassis from upper floors of multistory manufactured homes; comments closed Aug. 11 and no final rule has been issued.

Why you should care

HUD estimates the change would save about $4,800 to $6,700 on each multistory home, but it expects only 20 to 25 such homes a year to benefit, so the near-term effect is small. Separately, Congress removed the chassis requirement from the statute in the ROAD to Housing Act, which became law in July without the President's signature.
